As the fashionable shape evolved through the late 1820s through the early 1840s, so did the necessary foundation garments. Stays of the period generally retained the same shapes and seaming as earlier styles, but they, too, shifted towards a curvier, hourglass silhouette.

While they have similar bust and hip gores when compared with our Regency long stays, our 1830s stays have a less extreme push-up bustline, a lower hip line, and a higher, more defined waist. These stays feature a curved version of our exclusive Redthreaded wooden busk, which helps to correct modern posture and support the bust, and the adjustable straps draw the shoulders back and allow you to anchor 1830s sleeve supports in place

Details:

  • Appropriate for 1820s–1840s
  • Cotton sateen fashion fabric outer layer
  • English cotton coutil and twill strength/lining layers
  • Half-boned with steel boning
  • Plus sizes (18–26) feature additional boning throughout for added support
  • Removable wooden busk at center front
  • Center back lacing with two-piece nickel grommets
  • Alterable side seams and straps

CUSTOM ORDER PROCESS: Please enter the following measurements in the notes at checkout (taken over a well-fitting modern bra): bra size, bust, underbust, waist, hip 7" below waist, underarm to waist, back of neck to waist.

Our 1830s stays are based closely on historical pattern shapes and extant examples, but utilize theatrical construction techniques and modern materials to bring you an accurate silhouette in a sturdy, comfortable garment.
