The 1790's saw huge shifts in western women's fashion. The bust was allowed to have curve again after centuries of conical silhouettes, and waistlines rose to underbust level. Staymakers employed many creative methods in adapting the earlier stays styles to fit with this new silhouette. Extant stays from this period vary widely in shape and construction.

We decided to follow the styles with a longer, lightly boned conical torso, and soft bust gores. The longer line and 12" wooden busk provide support, while the soft cups and drawstring at CF allow for a more natural yet slightly lifted bust curve. This style is meant to end just precisely at mid-bust, to accommodate the wide, low necklines seen in the period. We highly recommend wearing these over a shift, as pictured. This is the "missing link" between 18th century stays and the long line stays of the 1810's-1830's.

English cotton coutil strength layer, white cotton sateen fabric, and center back spiral lacing with two piece nickel grommets. Side seams and strap pitch are alterable.

Standard Sizing (pictured) ends about 1.5" above the waist at sides and back. Plus Sizing (18-26 Womens) extends just slightly lower with a bit of hip curve for more support and to prevent digging, and also includes additional boning.

All Redthreaded corsets are handmade by us in our Colorado studio. Please see our other listings for custom sizing, corsetry for other historical periods, avant garde corsets, and other costume pieces.
