Redthreaded
Why Redthreaded is quitting Black Friday.
We’re not having a sale. In fact, you can’t buy from us at all today.
Small businesses are feeling the pinch like never before. Tariffs, cheap factory-produced goods, rising authoritarianism, and shifting regulations are crushing sales numbers and profit margins.
Simultaneously, overconsumption is crushing our planet. Humans now produce over 100billionnew pieces of clothing every year, in an unsustainable extractive system fueled by fast fashion and consumer demand for more and cheaper petroleum-based goods.
We are not fast fashion. But Redthreaded has played the game and participated in Black Friday sales for over a decade. Every year, there’s a push to cut prices deeper and run discounts longer in a race to the bottom.
When a handmade or micro business runs a sale, we devalue our labor and expertise in a system that is already primed to discard us. This year, we’re not doing that.
Instead, we’re inviting our customers to think critically about spending habits, as we think deeply about how we want to show up in this challenging time in human history.
We encourage folks to shop intentionally with our friends who cannot afford to quit the game. Help the small businesses you love keep the lights on for one more year. If you’re able, consider even paying full price.
As for us, we’re going dark until Tuesday. Frankly, it feels like a relief. See you in December.
